Now let me tell you about today.
First last night, about 9pm I hear a vehicle pull up next to my van and a young couple set up a tent by the headlights of their car. It was a bit closer than I would have thought necessary but I did not worry as it was late and I was in bed. Then this morning I get out of bed at 7.30 and they are gone, that is one way of not paying for your campsite - arrive after fees are collected and leave before the next collection.
So off I go on a very nice beach walk, probably only a couple of kms except that I had a bit of difficulty finding the path back to my van and had to walk backwards and forwards a bit. You just cannot trust these old b.......... to do anything simply can you? Anyway after the usual morning routine I take off heading inland this time.
Heading inland requires a drive up the mountains as I am far enough north to be in the New England high country. But before I get there I try to trick my navigator into going off the motorway, that does not work and she (I should note here that the voice is called Karen) tells me that I have been driving for two hours and should have break. I had already figured out that it was time for morning tea and had started looking for a rest spot. I had just passed one at Bellingen but that was just before either my decision or her prompting. It then took me an hour before I finally found somewhere to pull off the road and have break.
So the mountain drive was steep, very twisty turny and the van performed very well but I have decided that Elaine was a better van driver than me, she seemed to be more in tune with it. It was of course also very pretty and at times spectacular. At one stage I stopped in a rest area, along with a couple of other vehicles to look at a waterfall that ran under the road. Interesting thing is that to get opposite the waterfall to photograph it one had to walk on the road next to the crash barrier past the sign that said that it is forbidden for pedestrians to walk on the road next to the crash barrier!!! Never mind we all did just that!
Eventually I get to Dorrigo but did not stop because my target was a place called Dangar Falls camping area. This is a privately owned property next to the falls picnic area and after some trouble finding a level spot (or spot where I could make the van level) I set up camp. It is a beautiful spot with views over green valleys to green hills and is probably worth a couple of days, absolutely beautiful. I have met the neighbours and tomorrow morning will walk to the falls.
That’s it from my camp in the clouds.
