Well it is the end of another very interesting day.

First stop after departing the beautiful campsite at Moorook was Loxton where I refilled a gas bottle and did a we spot of shopping. Then on to Berri which is a bright bustling town reached by crossing a fairly substantial bridge. There were some nice photo opportunities along the river with green lawns on the bank and views to under the bridge and houseboats at their moorings across the river. A visit to the visitor centre did not add anything to the must see list other than a steel mural under the bridge. I did take a few what to do along the Murray books and then photographed the mural and the larger than life pumping station. The heading out of town there was a great lookout and I love lookouts. But the nearest that I could park was one km away down a steep hill. Discretion took the better part of valour so rather than walk up the steep hill then climb about 15metres up the lookout, and of course the reverse journey, I drove out of town. Pity but that’s life you cannot hav everything.

Renmark was the next stop and a drive around town revealed the usual riverside park, this time with a huge paddle steamer that plays it’s trade as an entertainment centre. Then back across the river via a very old steel bridge that used to be raised as required. They were doing road and restoration work so that I got some photos as we proceeded at a very slow pace.

Next stop was Mildura about 180km away. Looking at the map last night I saw that the river takes a very big bend at this point. I also saw that the intervening land was mainly wetland and, based on what I have seen to date, probably dry or nearly dry. The other noticible factor affecting me was that the only roads going anywhere near the river were indicated as minor possibly unsealed. So once again I took the low road straight across to Mildura.

I have discovered that Mildura is not an rv friendly town and had a lot of trouble finding somewhere to stay. I have finished up at a pretty average caravan park but by the time I got here I had had enough. When I have difficulty finding a camp spot it does somewhat take the edge off the day, but even if it is cheap I prefer free camping (which is not always free) which is very informal and usually very friendly.

Reading my books I realise that I have driven past Wentworth which is where the Darling joins the Murray so I will backtrack tomorrow because I cannot miss that.
